The sense of scent is very powerful and contributes to our mood, memory or emotions. It transports us to a place, a time, or the memory of a loved one. The sense of smell helps us recall long-forgotten experiences. Humans can identify and remember 10,000 different scents. Even thinking about an odor is enough to evoke a particular time and place in our lives.
Think about the childhood memories: the freshly baked pie with apples and cinnamon, freshly baked bread, the fresh scent of the Christmas tree, the scent of bubble gum, the seaside salt and breeze, or the freshly cut grass.
Scent has the ability to help us recall specific memories, especially related to places and people. Scent evokes connections between the fragrances and the memories linked to a specific place.
One research, commissioned by Disneyland Paris also found more than half of Brits said the aromas of holiday destinations trigger lasting memories.
Professor Barry Smith, a sensory expert who worked with Disneyland Paris said: ‘More than any other sense, smell can evoke powerful, emotional memories. Whole scenes of people, places and things can be brought back to life by the mere hint of a long forgotten scent.
Escaping the scoching desert heat, I found myself wandering down the glimmering hallways of the world’s grandest shopping center. I was immediately refreshed by the cool indoor atmosphere and paused to take a deep breath. The aroma of Bakhoor incense lingered in the air as I admired the magnificent building surrounding me.
A state of the art, extravagant and exotic city; preserving distinctive traditions while welcoming the new. The fragrance of jammy red roses wafted over me as I passed by elegant Arabic women dressed in black abayas. Their husbands contrasting in white dishdashas. The scent of their dark wood smoking oudhs drifted into the atmosphere. Admiration for their luxurious lifestyle instilled in my mind as I continued exploring the city.
Key Notes: Rose, Oudh, Patchouli, Incense, Musk
TOKYO
A large crowd of people rushed past me up the stairs, I followed them out of the underground train station and found myself breathing the crisp Spring air. A beautiful contrast, I was lost in translation between the vibrant city and the calming oriental gardens surrounding me. A culture that is so minimal, yet elegantly bursting with life. I was in a meditative state.
The breeze carried the scent of sakura cherry blossoms and citrus notes. It stirred through the leaves of the Hanoki Trees and down the glistening streets. In the distance, I observed Sadouka women taking practice in a traditional tea ceremony. The aroma of fine matcha powder whisked with steaming hot water, filling me with tranquility and relaxation.
Key Notes: Yuzu, Wasabi, Cherry Blossom, Hinoki Wood, Green Tea
Fixated on the pulsing bass vibrating the concrete beneath my feet. My focus interrupted by the gleaming headlights of luxury cars pulling up to the scene. Friends and colleagues full of laughter and excitement approached the valet, handing off the keys and disappearing into the night club. As they entered the aroma of Russian leather and warm amber wafted into the streets.
I was greeted by a beautiful hostess who prompted me towards the entrance with a smile. The contrast of antique building exterior transitioned into a luxurious interior full of individual extravagances and wealth. The passionate and lustful scent of champagne corks popping filled the room. The comforting aroma of black tea brewing in the distance drifted across the air. A night to remember, lavishment and opulence.
Key Notes: Champagne, Russian Black Tea, Incense, Birch Leather, Amber.
In a cafe on the corner of 7th and West 35th, I waited for my coffee and read the business section in the Times. It was a brisk and refreshing morning. The sunlight began to shine through busy streets as the smell of fresh brewed coffee and espresso wafted across the shop.
I reached for my to-go cup and freshly baked chocolate croissant to begin my day. The aroma of roasted caramelized nuts from a street vendor prolonged in the morning air as I watched the locals briskly walk towards the gleaming towers of downtown. Chocolatey notes of cream and cocoa drifted from my coffee as I stirred in a treat of Bailey’s and faded into the daily hustle of NYC.
Key Notes: Coffee, Chocolate, Baileys, Almond, Sandalwood.
Exploring a lush peninsula full of thriving greenery and cool fresh air; the breathing forest swayed next to the modernly designed city. Bold trees and elegant skyscrapers stretched to the sky in unison. The rain slowly fell as the atmosphere became foggy and refreshing. I continued down the path toward the sound of crashing waves along a jagged shoreline.
My soul revitalized by the scents of sea salt and minerals. The wind blew gently and mixed the falling aromas of fern, juniper, pine, and cedar into the air. Behind the abundant ocean, powerful snow-capped mountains framed my view. Mesmerized by the natural landscape surrounding me, there I stood, truly at peace.
Key Notes: Juniper, Pine, Cedar, Ocean Water, Sea Salt.
LONDON
The radiating heat of the fireplace warmed my body as I rested on a vintage wingback leather chair. I watched the dry wood slowly transform to warm ambers as the fire danced and glistened; crackling and popping with every move. I brought the glass of brandy closer to my nose to smell the intoxicating aromas.
My body nourished from a delicious supper, the air was still intimate of plum and fruit aroma. I felt a sense of serenity as the quiet evening continued in the British country home. The vanilla-laced smoke of a fine cigar slowly burned as I took pleasure from my comforts.
Key Notes: Plum Brandy, Leather, Tobacco, Cedar, Vanilla, Tolu Balsam.
