Cannabidiol or CBD is a non-psychoactive (i.e. not euphoric) ingredient of cannabis sativa plant (marijuana). Lately, there has been a growth in public interest in CBD oil and supplements, considered one of the hottest products on the market today, with many promising health benefits.
Early research has indicated CBD to have potential benefits for many brain-related conditions such as anxiety, insomnia, epilepsy, conditions related to inflammation such as acne, type 1 diabetes and chronic pain.
How is CBD different from Marijuana?
CBD is an isolated component of Marijuana (one of hundreds), by itself non-psychoactive (does not cause brain euphoria). The whole Cannabis sativa plant contains many other compounds (up to 750), such as THC (Delta9-Tetrahydrocannabinol), which is the primary psychoactive component – meaning it changes a person’s state of mind and behavior when using it.
The least processed form of the cannabis plant is hemp, that contains CBD. Hemp and Marijuana come from the same plant, Cannabis sativa, but the difference consist in the active ingredients and psychoactive profile. Over the years, Marijuana farmers have selected plants with high levels of THC.
According to a report from the World Health Organization (WHO), the evidence to date does not indicate any major potential health related concern: “In humans, CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential… To date, there is no evidence of public health related problems associated with the use of pure CBD.”
What is the research behind CBD Oil and its benefits?
Reduce inflammation and manage chronic pain: A study from the European Journal of Pain suggested that CBD applied on skin could reduce pain and inflammation associated with arthritis.
Another study from the Journal of Experimental Medicine found that CBD significantly decreased chronic inflammation and pain in an animal model.
Anxiety disorders: A review from Neurotherapeutics found that CBD may help reduce anxiety in people with post-traumatic stress disorders, general anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Quit smoking: Some promising evidence indicates that CBD may help people quit smoking. A pilot study published in Addictive Behaviors showed that smokers using inhalers with CBD smoked less and had no further cravings for nicotine.
Epilepsy and brain disorders: Another review suggested that CBD can have a positive effect on people with epilepsy, including the complications related to this disease at neurological level. After researching the profile of CBD oil for treating epilepsy, the FDA approved Epidiolex (which contains CBD) as a therapy for this condition in 2018.
Fighting cancer: A review published in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology suggested that CBD has significantly supressed the growth of cancer cells, decreased their spread and influenced apoptosis, the mechanism via which cancer cells destroy themselves.
Type 1 diabetes: Research published in 2016 by Clinical Hemorheology and Microcirculation found that CBD may ease inflammation in the pancreas, associated with type 1 diabetes.
Acne: Another condition associated with inflammation, acne – a study published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation found that CBD helps decrease the production of sebum that leads to acne, partly because of its anti-inflammatory effect on the body.
Alzheimer’s disease: Research published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease suggested that CBD could slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease, helping people in the early stages of the disease to recognize people they know.
