Best Essential Oils for Hair Growth, Strength and Shine

Essential oils for hair growth and texture

While more information is needed, ongoing research suggests that essential oils can help with hair growth, strength and shine.

From using essential oils in your shampoo or conditioner, to homemade conditioners or masks, there are many ways in which you can use essential oils to your hair regimen.

Both carrier oils and essential oils are good for your hair and scalp, with different properties.

Essential oils and scalp massage may help stimulate hair growth related to inflammation or poor blood flow to the scalp.

How to Use Essential Oils for Your Hair

You can mix 2-3 drops of essential oil in a shampoo, conditioner or carrier oil.

Especially for frizzy hair, using oils to keep your hair moisturized is key. Most people with curly hair don’t wash their hair as often as people with normal hair, which can lead to scalp problems.

Essential oils are good for scalp support, have anti-dandruff properties, reduce scalp inflammation, nourish the hair and help with shine and texture.

Best Essential and Carrier Oils For Hair

Dry or damaged hair can especially benefit from an intensive moisturizer like castor oil or another carrier oils.

Unlike essential oils, carrier oils (such as coconut, olive, jojoba, argan, grapeseed) are not so strong and can stay in your hair longer. You can even leave them in your hair overnight. They work especially well for frizzy hair when you need more moisture.

Coconut oil softens the hair and increases its shine.

Olive oil is moisturizing, prevents hair from breakage, works as a leave-in conditioner, and adds shine to your hair.

Almond, jojoba and argan oils nourish and soften the hair and moisturize the scalp.

Castor oil – Many people use castor oil as a natural hair conditioner. Applying castor oil to the scalp will help moisturize dry, irritated skin and prevent and eliminate dandruff.

Essential Oils for Hair GrowthPeppermint Essential Oil

Peppermint oil has menthol, which can cause a cold, tingling effect on your scalp, because it increases circulation to the area it’s applied to. It can also cause the blood vessels under the skin to dilate.

Some research has suggested that peppermint oil promoted hair growth more effectively than topical applications of saline, jojoba oil, and minoxidil, which is a medication commonly used to treat hair loss.

It was also found that peppermint essential oil increased scalp thickness and the number of hair follicles.

Mix 2-3 drops of peppermint essential oil with a carrier oil, massage it into your scalp and leave it for 3-15 minutes. This application may stimulate blood flow to the scalp. If needed, apply more mixture on your hair for split ends, shine and moisture. Then wash your hair as you would normally do.

If allergic reactions do occur, rinse with soap and water as soon as possible. If you experience problems breathing, dizziness, and changes in consciousness, you should seek urgent medical assistance.

According to the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy, some oils, such as sage and peppermint oils, shouled not be used during pregnancy or while breast-feeding. Always seek your doctor’s advice.

Some people may need repeated or frequent applications to see results from using essential oils. If a person does not experience the desired results, they can talk to their doctor about other options for reducing hair loss.
