Fighting Pet Odors with Essential Oils

Remove Pet Odor With These Essential Oils
We love our pets, but we also know that they can cause some pretty unpleasant odors. Fortunately, essential oils are a natural way to keeping your home smelling great no matter how many pets you have.
The best essential oils to use for removing pet smells include those with antiviral and antibacterial properties. These essential oils will kill the viruses in your home, which can help you get rid of that stinky smell. You can also make DIY deodorizers with essential oils, as well as use them to purify your home air.
Essential oils can be used to freshen up pet odors and make the home smell inviting.
Some of the antiviral and antibacterial oils include: eucalyptus, thyme, cinnamon, clove, oregano, tea tree, lemon and lavender.

How to use essential oils to fight pet odor

One of the most important steps in reducing pet odors is removing the source of the odor. However, pet odors are extremely difficult to remove from carpets, furniture, and other areas of your home.
Some essential oils do a great job of combating pet odors. You’ll want to mix the antibacterial and antiviral ones with some others that work best at neutralizing pet smells. The idea is to create a cleaner that will address a wide variety of stains and odors.
Whether it’s an air freshener, animal-safe spray, or diffuser, essential oils can help you eliminate pet smells in your home.

Spray cleaner

The following spray is great for removing pet odors from carpets, rugs, and upholstery.
Add 10-20 drops essential oil of choice and fill the rest of the bottle with white vinegar and distilled water. Spray your pet’s favorite surfaces to remove odors, then wipe clean with a towel or sponge.
You can experiment with other essential oils like grapefruit and tea tree oil for their deodorizing properties, or even add in some lemon, orange or mandarin extract for a citrusy smell.
The vinegar helps neutralize the bacteria that causes bad smells and the essential oils leave behind a clean scent. This natural cleaner combines vinegar, distilled water and essential oils to neutralize odors and leave behind a fresh scent – without harsh chemicals.

Carpet cleaner

Pet odors can be stubborn and persistent. This eco-friendly carpet cleaner is all natural, made with ingredients that you likely have in your kitchen or bathroom. This carpet cleaner not only leaves your carpet smelling fresh, but also removes pet odors from the affected area.
Mix 3 cups of water, ¾ liquid castile soap and 10 drops of your favorite essential oil in a kitchen blender until foamy. Remove the foam, rub into the soiled area with a damp sponge or scrub brush. Let the foam dry completely then vacuum the area. This can also be used on upholstery.
You may want to use this recipe again after a couple hours to make sure the odor has been completely eliminated.

Carpet deorizer

Your carpet is also another source of odor because it traps dust mites, pollen and pet dander. Fortunately, there are ways you can eliminate these odors with everyday items around the house.
This carpet deodorizer recipe is one of the easiest ways to get rid of foot and pet odors – with no other chemicals so your pets aren’t exposed to unnecessary fragrance or irritants. Sprinkle liberally over carpets, let set for 1-2 hours or overnight, then vacuum thoroughly.
This simple DIY recipe features 2 cups baking soda and 30 drops essential oil, which together absorb moisture, eliminate smells, and add a fresh scent to any room.

Are essential oils safe for pets?

Essential oils are great to use in diffusers around the house, but we do urge caution when using them with animals, especially cats. Pets are sensitive to some oils and can be harmed by them.
The pet should not ingest the oil or have direct contact with the essential oil.
Most problems occur from the improper use of the oils themselves or from low quality diffusers. The safest way to diffuse your oils is to choose a high quality diffuser that allows you to control fragrance intensity. A few options we recommend are Aromini and Aromini BT models, which both feature fragrance control via Bluetooth directly from your phone.
Another way to ensure safety is so only use pure or organic aroma oils. This ensures you have a pleasant scent without risking problematic additives or chemicals that may be harmful for pets exposed directly to them.
Lastly, do your best to avoid using oils that contain eucalyptus or mint (typically good for cleaning and with antiviral and antibacterial effect), all of which have been confirmed as problematic for pets when exposed directly, or if the scent is overpowering.
Instead, opt for oils that your veterinarian recommends, or ones that have been confirmed to be mild, calming and unproblematic (lavender, for example). Never apply oils directly to your pet without consulting a veterinarian.
