How to Get Rid of Cellulite – Do Treatments Really Work?

Cellulite treatment

9 in 10 women experience the unpleasant cellulite, which most commonly affects areas like the butt, thighs, and stomach. It can be a blow to our self-esteem, however, you’re not alone in this process. Cellulite is normal, even for women who are fit, practice sport regularly and are conscious about their food choices.

What is actually cellulite and how does it form?

Diet and weight lossCellulite occurs when the connective fibers underneath the skin lose their elasticity. It can be also a mixed result of genetics, gender (most common it affects women), tissue structure, hormonal unbalance and poor body circulation. It can be also worsen by the toxins in your body, when the skin cannot flush them out. Stretching and strengthening those areas and the overall muscles can help.

Do you ever get rid of cellulite permanently?

Because the cellulite mechanism is complex and happens to skin on a deeper level, it’s extremely tough to treat. However, there are some cellulite reduction strategies that can help, which you can do yourself at home or in the dermatologist office (such as laser and radio-frequency procedures), which offer an effect that last for 1-2 years.

So, how can you reduce the appearance of cellulite and prevent its formation?

1. Water/ proper hydration – helps with weight management, preventing cellulite in the first place. Secondly, water detoxifies, flushes out toxins and improve the appearance of orange peel skin. Do you have difficulties with drinking enough water or simply want something more fun?

2. Diet and weight loss – nutrition is important for weight loss, helping reduce the appearance of cellulite. Eat plenty of veggies – antioxidants protect against free radicals, preventing the collagen breakdown. Berries in particular are high in antioxidants. Foods with high water content can also help you stay hydrated and lose weight. Replace processed fats with healthy fats – omega-3 fatty acids such as salmon and other oily fishes, flaxseed, avocado, nuts and seeds. Healthy fats help with body circulation and unlike processed fats, are not likely to contribute to cellulite formation.

3. Physical activity – reducing overall body fat can help with cellulite too, as it boosts circulation and can help prevent or reduce its appearance. Weight gain however, particularly a gain in fat mass, will worsen cellulite due to increased fat cell formation. Losing weight and strengthening the muscles in the areas with cellulite can contribute to the overall appearance, but it won’t go away altogether. Yoga and body building exercises, targeted to build muscles, will make the cellulite appear less visible. For improved results, consider wearing cellulite leggings when doing your yoga or other sport activities.

4. Massage – creams or scrubs with stimulant ingredients, like caffeine, ginger and green or black tea may help by improving circulation and breaking down the fat-cell stores, but there is limited evidence for this. Considering the complex and unknown mechanisms of cellulite formation and that every person is different, it may also be the case that ingredients targeting cellulite may not be beneficial to everyone. Consider using a cellulite brush to dry massage your body and improve circulation, or a cellulite scrub.

5. Laser and radio-frequency procedures for cellulite do work. While the results are not permanent, they are effective in the short-term.

The most effective procedure appears to be Cellulaze, approved by the FDA in 2012, which is done via an optic laser that burns fat, breaks up fibrous connective tissue and stimulates the growth of new collagen fibers. The procedure starts at $3,500 per leg, but the results appear to last for 1-2 years.

Cellfina is another FDA-approved minimally invasive treatment that is clinically proven to improve the appearance of cellulite for at least two years. This procedure too can cost around $4,000.

Velashape is a device that uses infrared light, radiofrequency and massage with suction to increase lymphatic drainage and reduce the size of fat cells. It’s FDA-approved, costs around $1,000, but you need to have around 3 months of treatments to see results.

Combining these strategies is probably the healthiest approach to treating cellulite on the long term. However, if you want fast results, then the laser and radio-frequency procedures done in the dermatologist office offer the best results.
