It all started with a personal story

10 years ago, Carmen Tal experienced dry, color-damaged hair. Inspired by the Mediterranean, she applied argan oil to her hair.

After witnessing her hair transform from dry and damaged to shiny, smooth and healthy, Carmen Tal founded Moroccanoil.

Since 2008, Carmen Tal has been inspired by the Mediterranean landscape, sea and culture.

Moroccanoil is now an iconic beauty brand available in over 70 countries worldwide. “We are thrilled to be celebrating over ten years of oil-infused innovation and today our goal remains unchanged—to empower beautiful transformations and create products that inspire confidence,” says co-founder Carmen Tal.

Moroccanoil is bringing confidence to women worldwide.

Now, Carmen hopes to inspire all women to be resilient, exotic and full of mystery: just like the argan tree.

“My greatest inspiration was to listen to the inspiration around me… and to listen to the women around me, for whom I created Moroccanoil” – Carmen Tal

With more than 50 different products for hair alone, Moroccanoil has a product for every hair type and need. The brand also offers an irresistible collection of body care products.

The Argan Oil Story by Moroccanoil®

From the argan tree to the nourishing and hydrating hair and body products from Moroccanoil, see how the brand that launched oil-infused beauty has been inspired by argan oil.

History of Morrocan argan oil

Moroccan argan oil (also known as silk oil of Morocco and UNESCO heritage) is made from the kernels of the argan tree fruit that grows almost exclusively in Morocco. This oil is one of the rarest in the world due to the small supply and the limited growing area, hence its expensive price. Argan oil can cost as much as $300 per liter, making it the world’s most expensive edible oil.

So why has argan oil suddenly gained such popularity? And what makes it so expensive?

Rich in essential fatty acids (omega 3 and 6, vitamin E) and antioxidants, argan oil has been used for centuries by Mediterranean women for its nourishing and hydrating qualities.  The argan oil is able to help revitalize skin, increase hair’s elasticity and restore shine to dull, broken hair. It is also a powerful UV-protector and it has been known to help reduce the appearance of wrinkles.

How the Morrocan argan oil is made

Traditionally, the oil was produced by hand. Just 20 years ago,  the production of argan oil was isolated to villagers in Morocco, who sold it locally for as little at $3 per liter.

Argan oil can nowadays cost as much as $300 per liter, making it the world’s most expensive edible oil. It is an exclusive oil, used in high-end cosmetic products and Moroccan cuisine.

What are the benefits of Moroccan oil
Moroccan oil is used to improve the appearance of dry and damaged skin, hair, and nails. It is also good for cooking. Moroccan oil is packed with omega fatty acids, which improve dry skin and add shine to damaged hair.
Does Moroccan oil help hair grow?
It could make your hair grow. “Products containing argan oil potentially help nourish the scalp and encourage dermal stem cells, therefore helping grow hair,” says Dr. Jaliman.
It can also make your hair and nails stronger, calm hair frizz, protect it against UV, may improve the hair scalp and the hair structure.

Moroccan oil is considered anti-aging, which means it can help lessen the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and prevent sun damage.

Moroccan oil has oleic acid, a highly comedogenic ingredient that can clog pores.  So it could cause inflammatory acne, so proceed with caution if your skin is prone to acne. “If you are acne-prone and experience breakouts often, I would not use too much of any oil,” warns Dr. Jaliman.
