Poor sleep can lead to mental health issues such as anxiety and depression, according to a study from the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH).
Researchers say people with diagnosed mental health conditions have worse sleep quality, including waking up more often and for longer periods of time than the general population.
The study – the biggest study ever conducted – was based on data from 89,205 participants in the United Kingdom who wore accelerometers on their wrists that tracked body movement 24 hours a day for a week.
Poor sleep can lead to mental health issues and poor mental health contributes to poor sleep. Sleep pattern differences were a feature of all mental illnesses studied. This can lead to a vicious cycle – poor sleep, leading to poor mental health which in turn leads to more poor sleep.
There is hope though, as there are things that we can do to reduce our risk of developing mental health problems and improve the quality of our sleep.
