Summer Skin and Hair Care with Essential Oils

Skin and Hair Health during Summer

Protect and nourish your skin and repair and strengthen your hair this summer using essential oils.

Sun (UVs), salt water, chlorine, wind, and other environmental factors can all affect your skin and hair’s condition. Exposure to UV rays can affect the health of your skin and cause wrinkles, dryness, age spots, and even sunburns. The sun can affect your hair too, making it prone to breakage.

Here are some tips to protect your skin and hair from the hot weather outside.

Protect, Hydrate and Repair Your Skin

  1. Clean Your Skin – your beauty routine starts with clean skin.

     2. Exfoliate Your Skin

Some popular exfoliants include salt/ sugar/ coffee (for your body) or baking soda (for face). Make a scrub using a carrier oil like jojoba, olive or coconut oil and your favorite essential oil. Avoid using citrus oil with sun exposure!

DIY Exfoliating Scrub for Your Body

• 1/2 cup ground sea salt, sugar, or coffee

• 1/2 cup of coconut, olive, or Jojoba oil

• 2-3 drops of an essential oil of your choice (example: lavender, rose oil, chamomile)

Directions: mix all ingredients until well blended. While in the shower or bath, apply the scrub to your body using gentle circular motions, but avoid your face.

Mix baking soda with water until you reach the desired consistency, then rub the formula into your skin. For acne-prone skin, you can add 1-2 drops of Tea Tree oil. Alternatively, you can use a light oil base like Jojoba oil instead of water.

By getting rid of dead cells on the surface of your skin, exfoliation can help keep your skin smooth and healthy, and prevent dark spots and wrinkles.

    3. Hydrate Your Skin

Drink water – Drinking water not only helps your body stay healthy and hydrated, but it can ensure your skin stays glowing and radiant.

Jojoba Oil can be used as a head-to-toe moisturizer (even in your hair!). For a scented experience, add a few drops of your favorite essential oil, like rosemary or lavender. But avoid citrus-based oils like lemon, lime, grapefruit, and citronella, as they should not be used before going out in the sun.

    4.  Wear Products with SPF

Using products with a minimum of 30 SPF is recommended by the experts at the American Academy of Dermatology. The higher the protection, the better. Sun ages your skin, causes sun spots, hyperpigmentation, and wrinkles.
